Sacramento – Assemblymember Jean Fuller, R-Bakersfield, today issued the following statement in response to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s revised 2007-08 state spending plan:
“I commend Governor Schwarzenegger for proposing a May Budget Revision that does not raise taxes on California’s hard-working families. California does not have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. The citizens of California deserve a government that is responsible with their hard-earned tax dollars.
“I am especially pleased with the Governor’s proposal to set aside $175 million for career technical education programs to hire more teachers, improve facilities, and purchase new equipment. The Governor’s priorities go hand-in-hand with the career technical education bills I introduced this year. Assembly Bills 32, 973 and 974 would provide high school students with greater access to career technical education courses. Expanding career technical programs through legislation and the budget will help ensure that California employs a well-trained workforce to meet the growing demands of a global economy.
“Although the Governor’s overall budget plan is a step in the right direction, lawmakers must avoid funding new ongoing programs and resist the temptation to create costly new financial obligations that California cannot afford. Expanding the size of government, as some legislators have proposed, would reverse the progress we have made in recent years to reduce the size and severity of the state’s deficit.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to craft an on-time, balanced budget the people of California deserve.”
