Sacramento – Assemblymember Jean Fuller, R-Bakersfield, today defended the will of the people and traditional marriage in California from an assault by Sacramento Democrats, who passed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in California.
“Californians left no doubt where they stand on same-sex marriage, saying loudly and clearly at the ballot box that marriage should be between one man and one woman,” said Fuller. “The people’s vote on a ballot measure should not be undone by a partisan vote of state lawmakers.”
Assembly Bill 43, by San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno, would radically redefine marriage in California and allow same-sex couples to wed legally in the state, in stark opposition to the will of the people on this issue.
California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 22 in March 2000 with 61.4 percent of the vote, including majorities in 52 of the state’s 58 counties. The measure clearly states: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California.” AB 43 would attempt to overturn this initiative without a vote of the people.
In 2005, Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed a previous version of this legislation, stating in his veto message that he “does not believe the Legislature can overturn an initiative approved by the people of California.” The Governor has already publicly stated that he will veto AB 43 if the legislation reaches his desk this year.
“The Legislature should not waste time debating divisive social issues when the state has so many pressing challenges that warrant the Legislature’s full attention, such as responsibly reforming health care and solving our long-term budget problems,” stated Fuller.
AB 43 was passed out of the Assembly with no Republicans supporting the measure. It now goes to the State Senate for consideration.
