Sacramento – Assembly Concurrent Resolution 58, authored by Assemblymember Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield), passed the Assembly Transportation Committee yesterday with unanimous, bipartisan support. ACR 58 designates a segment of Interstate Highway 5 in Kern County as the ‘CHP Officer Erick S. Manny Memorial Highway.’
California Highway Patrol Officer Erick Manny was killed in the line of duty on December 21, 2005 while in pursuit of a speeding driver on Interstate 5 in Kern County. The driver of the vehicle was traveling in excess of 100 mph and weaving in and out of traffic to avoid Officer Manny, who lost control of his patrol car near the Grapevine exit off ramp.
“I introduced ACR 58 to honor Officer Manny for his unwavering dedication to the community and his service to the state,” said Fuller. “Officer Manny gave his life in the line of duty. There is no greater, more noble sacrifice any of us can make.”
Officer Manny, a three-sport athlete at Highland High School in Bakersfield, graduated from the CHP Academy and was assigned to the Fort Tejon office in 2001. He was a dedicated officer who loved his job and commanded the respect of his coworkers and the public he loyally served. Prior to joining the Highway Patrol, Officer Manny served as an Emergency Medical Technician and paramedic for an ambulance company.
Officer Manny is remembered not only as an officer, but as a friend and family man, leaving behind his wife Ronina and two young children; son Toran (11) and daughter Teagan (8).
