Traffic-actuated signals are signal lights that detect the presence of cars and can change so that cars aren’t waiting at a red light if no other traffic is coming. However, these signal lights do not currently detect motorcycles or bicycles. AB 1581 requires that when a signal is first placed, or replaced, it be designed to detect the presence of motorcycles and bicycles. This will only become operative once Cal-Trans establishes standards for detection of bicycles by traffic-actuated signal lights.
